Christmas Adverts & Their Audiences

1. Cadbury Christmas (2015)

2. John Lewis #ManOnTheMoon (2015)

3. Sainsbury's - Mog's Christmas Calamity (2015)

1. Cadbury Christmas (2015)

Duration - 1:01

This advert shows the story of the build up to the 25th of December through the view of an ordinary person doing things that they would do in their everyday life such as go for a walk or go to the shop. I believe that the target audience for this advertisement is people of all ages, this is because the advert features adults (female and male Lorry drivers), children (also male and female) and reindeers which I think is key in a Christmas advert as they are Linked to Christmas and Santa Claus.

In the screenshot below taken from the advert, the advert revolves around the construction of the Christmas advent calendar built via lorries. This conveys to children within the target audience as stereotypically it is seen by society that children have a strong bond/connection with chocolate and therefore they would persuade their parents or guardians to get them the advent calender.  Additionally, this is also a way of the Cadbury company promoting their product to the general public and target audience of adults and children in time before the month of Christmas.

Additionally, the use of the close up of the young boy in the car is effective as it shows his reaction to seeing the cadbury Christmas Lorry driving past on the motorway. Through the use of this shot, the audience would engage emotionally as the boy shows he is shocked, surprised and happy by what he sees which is what an adult would want to see a child doing when opening their Christmas presents.

At the end of the advertisement the credits appears, alongside the credits is a hashtag that reads #CADVENT. By having this hashtag featured in the advert it allows the audience to become active from passive and enables them to have the opportunity to interact with the advert and company whilst on social media and also share it online.

2. John Lewis #ManOnTheMoon (2015)

Duration - 2:11

This advert shows a young girl communicating with an old man who lives on the moon through the use of a telescope. In my opinion, the target audience for this advert is also directed to people of all ages as the message at the end of the advert reads 'show someone they're loved this Christmas'. I believe that John Lewis are attempting to tell their target audience that despite all the love and care that family and friends show towards each other is persistent during the festive time of the year, they should also show those who may not have anyone to spend Christmas with and show them that you care in any way possible.

Similarly, the John Lewis advert and the Cadbury Christmas advert share the same motive of aiming to make their target audience become active from passive which is by having a hashtag at the end of the advertisement. John Lewis' hashtag reads #ManOnTheMoon. In a similar way, this allows the target audience to become interactive with the advert online on social media just like the Cadbury advert by sharing the video and discussing it on large social networking sites such as Twitter, a Tumblr and Facebook.

Additionally, the use of the wide shot as the advert concludes is effective as it shows the surface of the man on the moon and Earth in the far distance (set in space). This shot is used immediately after the man receives presents from the young girl, this conveys to the audience that it doesn't matter how old you are, you can still do something to make someone happy on Christmas. Moreover, it also doesn't matter how far out you are or how far away you are from someone, you can still attempt to make someone happy during the time of Christmas.

3. Sainsbury's - Mog's Christmas Calamity

Duration - 3:31

This advert presents how a family cat ruins christmas for it's family overnight. A narrator tells the story to the audience in order to get Sainsbury's target audience engaged and influenced as the story includes the neighbourhood uniting together to help the family repair their Christmas Day. In my opinion, by having Sainsbury's including a narrator telling the story of 'Mog's Christmas Calamity' to the audience, they are allowing the audience to get interactive as at the end of the advert, it invites the audience to click the external link which shows how Sainsbury's made the advert and the main character 'Mog'.

Additionally, the message at the end of the advert which reads 'Christmas is for sharing' implies to the target audience that what was shown in the advert can happen to any family and that it is always good to share especially during a time where family and friends are closely around you and a bond is built/made stronger.
